Expert Q&A with Wedding Planner Lisa Mueller-Krause
From developing a personal wedding concept to coordinating every detail behind the scenes on the wedding day, thoughtful planning can make the entire experience feel more relaxed. Below, Lisa shares her perspective on the decisions, trends and planning details couples should keep in mind.
There’s much more to wedding planning than just logistics. How would you describe your unique role as a wedding planner, and what is the greatest value you bring to a couple’s big day?
“For me, the greatest value of my work as a wedding planner is giving couples time and a sense of security. Many couples only realize during the planning process just how many decisions, numbers and small details come together and that is exactly what I take care of so they can enjoy a wedding planning experience that is as stress-free as possible. After 13 years in the wedding industry, I also know many ways to use budgets wisely, find good solutions and sometimes access options or conditions that couples may not otherwise be offered. And on the wedding day itself, it is all about letting them enjoy the moment while I make sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes.”
Every couple wants their wedding to feel authentic and personal. How do you help couples define their unique wedding vision and bring it to life?
“For me, a personal wedding always begins with truly understanding the couple: What suits them, what do they love and what makes them feel comfortable? That is why the chemistry between my couples and me is incredibly important. Only when we speak the same language can we create a wedding concept that genuinely feels like them. During the planning process, I develop an individual design concept for each couple, collect ideas over several weeks, discuss them together and refine them based on their feedback. It is not about creating the most luxurious or extravagant wedding. It is about the couple being able to say, ‘This is exactly us, and if it looks like this in the end, we will be more than happy.”
For newly engaged couples who are just beginning their wedding planning journey, what are the most important first steps they should take to organize the planning process effectively?
“At the beginning of wedding planning, I would always start with three things: the guest count, the budget and your own wishes for the venue. With the guest list in particular, it is worth taking an honest look at who you truly want to celebrate with and who may only be on the list out of politeness, because even ten guests more or less can make a difference of several thousand euros. From there, decide what you can and want to spend and what type of wedding venue genuinely feels right for you as a couple. Not what others expect, but what you actually want to celebrate.”
Budgeting is often one of the most challenging aspects of wedding planning. What is your top advice for couples to set a realistic budget and stick to it?
“My most important advice for wedding budgeting is to do an honest reality check between your wishes, guest count and available budget. Many couples initially forget costs such as the wedding dress, suit, rings, accommodation or a wedding planner and only calculate the venue, food and drinks. That is why it is important to research early what individual wedding vendors actually cost in your region and which services need to be included in the overall budget. As a very rough guide, depending on your expectations and region, you can expect around €250 to €500 per guest, with additional services potentially adding to that amount.”
What are the most popular wedding planning and design trends you are seeing for the upcoming wedding season?
“One of the biggest wedding trends I am seeing right now is elaborate lighting concepts: lots of candles, small table lamps, chandeliers or entire lighting installations above the dinner tables. Hydrangeas remain popular in wedding florals, while I am also seeing both more confidence with bold colors such as red and pared-back, modern concepts using a single color or chrome elements. Instead of the former boho look, weddings are moving in a more modern and individual direction, where huge amounts of flowers are not automatically necessary. Wedding weekends are also becoming increasingly important, with many couples wanting to spend not just one wedding day, but an entire weekend with their guests.”

What is the most common misconception brides have about hiring a wedding planner and how do you usually address it?
“A common misconception is that hiring a wedding planner means giving up too much control. I always like to clarify that I take as much work off my couples’ shoulders as they want, but the important decisions always remain theirs. For me, wedding planning is a collaborative process in which I structure, research, organize and find solutions so the couple can focus on the enjoyable decisions. How much they want to take on themselves is completely individual.”
A wedding day is full of moving parts. How do you ensure the day runs smoothly and remains stress-free for the couple so they can truly enjoy every moment?
“For me, a stress-free wedding comes down to extremely thorough preparation. A few months before the wedding, we go through the entire day from A to Z in a detailed planning meeting and clarify everything from food and drinks to setup, placement and timing. I then coordinate with all wedding vendors, organize delivery times, setup and breakdown and create timelines, vendor lists and setup plans. On the wedding day itself, I am there to keep all the moving parts together so that, ideally, the couple does not have to think about any of the organization at all.”
From a planning perspective, how does the wedding dress and bridal style influence the overall aesthetic and design of the wedding?
“For me, the wedding dress is less the starting point of the wedding design and more one of the puzzle pieces that completes the overall picture. When we develop a personal wedding concept that truly suits the couple, the venue and the atmosphere they want to create, a clear sense of what feels right for the bridal look often follows naturally. Most importantly, the bride should feel completely comfortable in her dress rather than trying to fit a perceived concept. In my experience, personal style naturally finds its place within the overall wedding aesthetic.”
What is your absolute favorite part of the wedding day to witness or organize as a planner?
“Even after 13 years of wedding planning, I still regularly get tears in my eyes during the ceremony entrance because that is the moment when everything we have worked toward for so long suddenly comes together. I also love the special atmosphere during dinner, when the lights slowly come on, the candles are glowing and everyone is simply sitting together, eating and feeling happy. And then, of course, there is the moment the party begins and the dance floor fills up. That is when I think every time: this is why we do it all.”

Do you have any final words of wisdom for brides as they embark on this exciting chapter?
“Plan the wedding that feels right for you as a couple, not the one other people think you are supposed to have. Family and friends often mean well, but ultimately it is your wedding, your money and, most importantly, your shared memory. You do not have to follow a tradition, invite a guest or include a detail simply because others expect it. If, on your wedding day, you feel that the celebration truly reflects who you are, you have done everything right.”
