Expert Q&A with Bridal Makeup Artist Bobbi Brown
From skincare prep to wedding day longevity, bridal makeup is both an art and a science. Below, Kathrin Jokubonis shares her professional insights and answers our most frequently asked questions about modern bridal beauty.
Bridal beauty has evolved so much in recent years. What are the biggest bridal makeup trends you are seeing right now?
“Bridal beauty is moving strongly towards skin-focused, modern looks. The biggest trend right now is that everything begins with the skin – a fresh, radiant base is the main focus, and it allows the bride to look timelessly luminous throughout the day. Overall, looks are becoming softer and more personal. Fresh, natural flush instead of glittery highlighters, softly framed eyes, and subtle definition rather than heavy contouring or dramatic glam. It is less about transformation and more about effortlessly enhancing natural beauty.”
Every bride wants to look and feel like herself on her wedding day. How do you help brides find a makeup-look that feels true to their personality while still feeling elevated?
“For me, it all starts with the very first conversation and the trial appointment. I always ask the bride to come in wearing her signature makeup, so I can see what she truly feels comfortable in. From there, I combine her everyday habits with her vision for the wedding day and develop a look that feels familiar yet truly special.”
What does your ideal skincare and prep routine look like in the weeks and days leading up to the wedding?
“If you are happy with your skin, the golden rule before the wedding is: no experiments. This is not the moment to suddenly test a completely new skincare routine. Skin looks best when you stick to what works and keep it calm and balanced.
On the wedding day itself, preparation is everything. The skincare applied underneath the makeup makes up a large part of the final result. Well-cared-for, hydrated and smooth skin – supported by vitamins and the right active ingredients such as niacinamide – ensures that makeup looks fresh, radiant and natural all day long.”
Wedding days are long and emotional. What are your top tips for ensuring a bridal makeup look that lasts from the ceremony all the way through to the last dance?
“Longevity starts with the right skin preparation. A well-cared-for, balanced base ensures that makeup stays fresh throughout the day. The choice of textures also matters: dry skin loves creamy products such as cream blush, while oily skin often works better with powder textures.
Layering order is equally important: build up light, creamy layers first, then set strategically. And a principle that always helps – less is more. Working consciously with less product keeps the look longer lasting while remaining beautifully natural.”
How do you balance a “natural” look so it still looks defined and beautiful in professional wedding photography and different lighting conditions?
“The makeup should highlight the bride’s natural personality, but it is slightly intensified for the camera. As a makeup artist, I enhance the natural look by around 30 percent more, so it works equally well in person on the day and in photographs.”
How do you recommend brides use their trial appointment, and what should they bring or prepare to get the most out of the experience?
“It is best for the bride to come to the trial appointment wearing her signature makeup – this allows the artist to see immediately what she feels comfortable with. It is also helpful to bring moodboards or images from social media to capture the desired mood or style.
Ideally, the hair should also have been discussed or tested beforehand, with a reference photo to bring along. This allows the makeup to be perfectly tailored and ensures the best possible result for the wedding day.”
From intimate civil ceremonies to grand celebrations, how do you tailor a bridal makeup look to suit different wedding styles, venues, and dress silhouettes?
“First and foremost, the makeup should always suit the person and enhance their best features. After that, all further aspects such as the venue, the style of the celebration and the wedding dress are taken into account to capture the mood with the right elements. I also highly recommend timeless looks so that years later, the bride can look at her wedding photos and say: Wow, I was glowing.”
Bobbi Brown is known for its skin-first, natural approach to beauty. How does this philosophy translate into bridal makeup, and how do you ensure every bride, regardless of skin tone or texture, achieves that signature “glow from within”?
“The Bobbi Brown philosophy – always starting with the skin and emphasizing natural beauty – is perfectly suited for bridal makeup. Whether the bride is doing her own makeup or working with a makeup artist, it is essential to choose the right products for her skin type and texture. Only then can that natural glow from within be achieved.
It is also important to tailor textures and formulas to the individual: creamy products for dry skin, powder formulas for oily skin, light layering techniques and the right primers all help the makeup to glow throughout the day. Ultimately, it is about ensuring every bride gets her individual glow, feels comfortable and has her natural beauty highlighted in a timeless way.”

In your experience, what is the most common makeup mistake you see brides make, and how can they avoid it?
“A very common mistake is that the balance between everyday makeup and a bridal look is missing – often, the look lacks that little extra that truly elevates it in photographs. Another classic mistake is being too strongly influenced by trends or social media. Just because a look is stunning on someone else does not mean it will automatically suit your skin tone, face shape or personality.
Expert Tip: On your wedding day, focus on yourself. Enhance your own style with a thoughtful touch and always put your natural beauty first. That is what keeps the look timeless and radiant in every photo.”
What is your number one piece of advice for brides when it comes to planning their bridal beauty look, from timing and trials to the morning of the wedding?
“It is best for the bride to plan her hair and makeup trial around three months in advance. This leaves plenty of time to try everything calmly and make small adjustments if needed, without any last-minute stress on the wedding day.
On the big day itself: start with a clear schedule – hair first, then makeup – and consciously enjoy the preparation as a beautiful part of the day. Let it be a moment of joy that leads you into your wedding day feeling calm, confident and completely yourself.”
From a dramatic ballgown to a sleek column dress, a romantic A-line and a flowy peplum gown, how would you approach the makeup look for each of these four silhouettes, and what inspires your choices?
“Regardless of the dress, the most important thing is always to incorporate the bride’s eye shape, facial features and personality into the look. That is what makes the difference between beautiful makeup and a look that truly fits.
When the dress is already a true showstopper, the makeup can absolutely hold its own without feeling heavy. For a dramatic ballgown, I recommend making the eyes particularly expressive, but not with a classic, hard eyeliner. Instead, use a soft, diffused liner directly along the lash line that adds depth and definition without hardening the eyes. Pair this with radiant, natural skin with soft bronze accents to bring the complexion to life and create a harmonious, elegant contrast. The result is a look that feels glamorous, enhances the bride’s beauty and perfectly complements the dramatic statement of the gown.
A sleek column dress works beautifully with subtle contouring on the face and around the eyes, echoing the clean lines of the silhouette. Even so, the key remains the same: the bride’s face shape, eyes and personality always determine the details.
For a soft A-line silhouette, I recommend radiant skin and softly but expressively defined eyes. A little more blush than bronzer or contour works beautifully here to underline the romantic, soft aesthetic. Smoky lining techniques often look more beautiful than classic eyeliner for this style.
A peplum dress with a flowing skirt pairs perfectly with radiant, natural skin and soft bronze accents that bring the complexion to life and create a harmonious, elegant contrast. The result is a look that feels glamorous, enhances the bride’s beauty and perfectly complements the statement of the gown.
In general, I always recommend finding the right balance between eyes, cheeks and lips. If the eyes are defined, keep the lips and cheeks in a similar natural tone that already exists in the skin. If the eyes are kept more subtle, you can introduce a little more freshness and color in the cheeks and lips. The goal is always balance and harmony between the features, to keep the overall look timeless.”
